Ultimately Chenrezig, Relatively Speaking
In each session, we’ll go deep into one of the practical aspects of tantric Buddhist visualization, using the Short Chenrezig practice as our jumping-off point. Drawing on the teachings of great masters such as Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Bokar Rinpoche, and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, this series will be a “how-to” for cultivating and reenergizing a meaningful everyday Vajrayana practice, with an emphasis on revealing the thread of sacredness connecting everything.

The Four Stations of Mindfulness with Charles Dawes

The Four Stations of Mindfulness with Charles Dawes

“Hinayana, Mahayana, Vajrayana” Charles will offer observations regarding the practices of the three vehicles of Buddhism with special emphasis on techniques of mindfulness meditation based on the four stations of mindfulness which form the foundation for Mahayana and Vajrayana practices.

Charles Dawes is a senior practitioner member of Santa Monica KTC. He holds a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from the California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco, and celebrated his 50th year of taking refuge in 2021. Initially a student of vipassana meditation, he met HH 16th Karmapa in 1976 and later became a student of Ven Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in the late 1970s when he returned to his childhood home in Columbus, OH. He served on the board of Columbus KTC for many years and joined Santa Monica KTC when he moved to California in 2012. He currently lives in Desert Hot Springs, CA.

March 16
Compassionate Communication Pt. 3 with Lama Adam.

The Buddha established the equality of all beings by our common need to be happy and to avoid suffering.  If that’s true, why does it seem like we have so much to argue about?

In this final talk in the series, we’ll learn how to bring our internal experience of feelings and needs into productive dialogue with the outer world through communicating observations unburdened by our projections, and through making clear requests with an openness to “no”.

March 23
Joyful Wisdom Book study with Lama KathyLama Kathy will teach Rinpoche’s illuminating perspective which addresses the timeless problem of anxiety in our everyday lives. “From the 2,500-year-old perspective of Buddhism,” Rinpoche writes, “every chapter in human history could be described as an ‘age of anxiety.’ The anxiety we feel now has been part of the human condition for centuries.”So what do we do? Escape or succumb? Both routes inevitably lead to more complications and problems in our lives. “Buddhism,” he says, “offers a third option. We can look directly at the disturbing emotions and other problems we experience as stepping stones to freedom. Instead of rejecting or surrendering to them, we can befriend them, working through them to reach an enduring authentic experience of our inherent Wisdom, confidence, clarity, and joy.”

Inspirational Quote:
“A meditation technique used a great deal in Tibetan Buddhism is uniting the mind with the sound of a mantra. The definition of mantra is “that which protects the mind.” That which protects the mind from negativity, or which protects you from your own mind, is mantra.

When you are nervous, disoriented, or emotionally fragile, inspired chanting or reciting of a mantra can change the state of your mind completely, by transforming its energy and atmosphere. How is this possible? Mantra is the essence of sound, the embodiment of the truth in the form of sound. Each syllable is impregnated with spiritual power, condenses a deep spiritual truth, and vibrates with the blessing of the speech of the buddhas. It is also said that the mind rides on the subtle energy of the breath, the prana, which moves through and purifies the subtle channels of the body. So when you chant a mantra, you are charging your breath and energy with the energy of the mantra, and so working directly on your mind and your subtle body.”

Inspirational Quote:

“In the quintessential instructions on Mahamudra, we talk about the mind either being too tight or too loose, too focused or too relaxed. The advice given is that if the mind is not luminous, clear, and vivid, we need to tighten or concentrate it more. And if it is too bright, vivid, luminous, and clear, we need to relax it somewhat.”

Inspirational Quote: “Compassion is a far greater and nobler thing than pity. Pity has its roots in fear and carries a sense of arrogance and condescension, sometimes even a smug feeling of “I’m glad it’s not me.” As Stephen Levine says: “When your fear touches someone’s pain, it becomes pity; when your love touches someone’s pain, it becomes compassion.” To train in compassion is to know that all beings are the same and suffer in similar ways, to honor all those who suffer, and to know that you are neither separate from nor superior to anyone.”

Inspirational Quote:
“The nature of the mind, the essence of the mind, is empty. But is this emptiness just blank, inanimate nothingness? No. It is clear in that it can know things; it is able to understand and be aware of things. This is what is meant by clarity. The essence of this clarity is empty, and the essence of the emptiness is clarity. We can establish this through logic and inference, and by doing so we can develop certainty about the union of clarity and emptiness. We can also experience it in meditation. Through meditative experiences, we can come to know that the nature of mind is clarity inseparable from emptiness.”

Inspirational Quote:
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche describes a yogi wandering through a garden. He is completely awake to the splendor and beauty of the flowers and relishes their colors, shapes, and scents. But there is no trace of clinging or any “afterthought” in his mind.

As Dudjom Rinpoche says:

“Whatever perceptions arise, you should be like a little child going into a beautifully decorated temple; he looks, but grasping does not enter into his perception at all. You leave everything fresh, natural, vivid, and unspoiled. When you leave each thing in its own state, then its shape doesn’t change, its color doesn’t fade, and its glow does not disappear. Whatever appears is unstained by any grasping, so then all that you perceive arises as the naked wisdom of Rigpa, which is the indivisibility of luminosity and emptiness.”

Inspirational Quote:
Six realms of existence are identified in Buddhism: gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hells. They are each the result of one of the six main negative emotions: pride, jealousy, desire, ignorance, greed, and anger.

Looking at the world around us, and into our own minds, we can see that the six realms definitely do exist. They exist in the way we unconsciously allow our negative emotions to project and crystallize entire realms around us, and to define the style, form, flavor, and context of our life in those realms. And they exist also inwardly as the different seeds and tendencies of the various negative emotions within our psychophysical system, always ready to germinate and grow, depending on what influences them and how we choose to live.

Inspirational Quote:
In general shamatha mediation is when the mind is placed somewhere and rests there. But when we practice shamatha, we also investigate to see how the meditation is going while being mindful of the shamatha itself. “Is it going well? Is it not going well? Which antidote needs to be applied?” This checking of our mind as we are practicing is analysis.

Inspirational Quote:
Having received the blessings [of our guru] and generated great faith and devotion, we sit with our body lengthened and simply pay attention to the passing of the in and out of the breath. We don’t try to regulate the breath, but breathe naturally, staying aware of the breath going out and coming back in. We count the in-breath and the out-breath as one. We do not count out loud but are just aware. On our mala, we pay attention to the passing of the breath in and out for twenty-one counts. We should do this very carefully because this is said to be the vessel for doing Calm Abiding (Skt. Shamatha) practice.

Inspirational Quote:
There are several reasons for keeping your eyes open when you practice meditation. With your eyes open, you are less likely to fall asleep. Then, meditation is not a means of running away from the world, or of escaping from it into a trancelike experience of an altered state of consciousness. On the contrary, it is a direct way to help us truly understand ourselves and to relate to life and the world.

Therefore, in meditation you keep your eyes open, not closed. Instead of shutting out life, you remain open and at peace with everything. You leave all your senses—hearing, seeing, feeling—just open, naturally, as they are, without grasping after their perceptions.

Whatever you see, whatever you hear, leave it as it is, without grasping. Leave the hearing in the hearing, leave the seeing in the seeing, without letting your attachment enter into the perception.
